After months of anticipation, the Houghton Town Center location for Mod Pizza opened quietly on Tuesday, October 13. The only discernable announcement of the opening was the discreet flyer on the door of the new restaurant which appeared only about a week before. The new location did not appear on the Mod Pizza app nor their website until opening day.
As big fans of the pizza chain, my family and I ordered up some lunch, of course. Our in-app order included a 6” Maddy for our picky-eater, a 6” Caspian for me, and a mega dough with Hawaiian style toppings for my husband. We also added on two of their deliciously chocolatey No Name cakes. We also requested that black olives and mushrooms be added to my Caspian and light red sauce on the other two pies. The in-app purchase went smoothly, the order was completely correct, done in about 20 minutes, and my husband was able to do a curbside pick-up, which is probably a new option for this strange year that necessitates so much distance.
For those not familiar with Mod Pizza, their simple business model is to charge by size of the pizza, rather than for each handful of toppings. They also have a variety of combinations to minimize the tribulations of indecision. I for one, appreciate their 12 suggested options. Thus, I ordered the Caspian, their delightful version of a BBQ chicken-style pizza which includes BBQ sauce, mozzarella, gorgonzola cheese, chicken, and red onion rings topped off with a whimsical BBQ sauce swirl. Pretty as well as delicious! The simple Maddy is probably the most kid-friendly combination with just two toppings: red sauce and mozzarella. I highly recommend the Dominic, the Tristan, and the Dillon James as well. If you’re in the mood to spice things up, try the Calexico or the Viviana.
In addition, Mod also offers six generous salad options if you’re not in the mood for pizza. I can’t wait to try the Cranberry Crunch Harvest Salad which features Romaine lettuce, mixed greens, gorgonzola cheese, roasted garlic, balsamic dressing, a balsamic fig glaze, and a cranberry seed blend. I’m willing to bet it’s not just healthy, but colorful and scrumptious as well. A variety of beverages, four flavors of cheesy bread, and their famous no-name cake are also offered as accompaniments to your meal. For those of age, beer and wine are also available for pick-up only. My suggestion is to download their app and order up some vittles today! Let’s show how happy the folks of Vail and Rita Ranch are to welcome Mod Pizza to our neighborhood. Bon appetit!
